Jesus Was Palestinian” — Art Print

About the Print

A vibrant, hand-lettered artwork declaring a historical and political truth: Jesus was Palestinian. Bold, swirling typography fills the composition in the colours of earth, fire, and life — greens, golds, reds, and blues. The Palestinian flag waves through the centre of the piece, grounded by the word SUMUD — Arabic for steadfast perseverance — and the phrase steadfast, ongoing perseverance inscribed at the base.

The date 1948 and the word Nakba are embedded in the upper right corner — a quiet insistence that history be named.

This is not a political provocation. It is a statement of fact, of solidarity, and of care.

What is the Nakba?

Nakba means catastrophe or chaos in Arabic. May 15, 1948 is the date Palestinians mark as the beginning of one of the largest forced displacements of the 20th century — and a wound that has never been allowed to heal.

Between 1947 and 1949, at least 750,000 Palestinians from a population of 1.9 million were made refugees. Zionist forces took more than 78% of historic Palestine, ethnically cleansed and destroyed approximately 530 villages and cities, and killed around 15,000 Palestinians in a series of mass atrocities, including more than 70 massacres.

More than 400 Palestinian towns were systematically destroyed between 1948 and 1950 — homes, businesses, houses of worship, and entire urban centres demolished to prevent the return of their owners.

Many fled on foot, carrying whatever they could on their backs.

As early as December 1948, the UN General Assembly called for refugee return, property restitution, and compensation. More than 75 years later, despite countless UN resolutions, those rights continue to be denied.

As of 2021, there are approximately 8.36 million Palestinian refugees — Nakba survivors and their descendants — scattered across the West Bank, Gaza, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and beyond.

The Nakba did not end in 1948. It is ongoing.
