‘Queer and African’ Print
‘Queer and African’ by Janina Nana Yaa
A3 print on 160 gsm paper
Original medium is ink pen and marker on paper
To be Queer and African is a beautiful and powerful thing. It goes beyond our physical bodies and who we like to be sexually intimate with. Queerness, even though an English word - is deeply embedded in the identity of who we are as Africans. We may have lost some of our language for this but reclaiming it in English doesn’t make it any less African in its essence. We have always existed and we will continue to.
No matter how much you try to oppress us, suppress us, restrict us, abuse us, deliver us from ‘evil’ or kill us. We will continue to be here and we will continue to be reborn as the Ancestors that we are.
To be Queer means we live beyond colonial standards and structures, it means we love cosmically and ancestrally. To be Queer means we express through, within and way far beyond the binaries of what it means to be a ‘man’ or ‘woman’, ‘male’ or ‘female’. To be Queer means we do need to live based on the assignment of our genitalia. To be Queer and African means we are gatekeepers of the spirit realms and powerful healers.
To be Queer and African is one of the most beautiful things you can be in existence and it should always always be celebrated in its fullest capacity. May we remember we are valued and loved. May we remember to value and love ourselves over and over again. Àṣẹ
An affirming print for the Queer African. Could be a lovely gift for a friend or loved one.
